| In this diagram the switch is closed and the circuit is complete. Lets take this diagram and trouble shoot why the light bulb is not working. First we check the obvious, is there power. Check the circuit breaker. If there are no circuit breaker or fuses off or tripped we proceed to the next most obvious. Check the light bulb. A light bulb can be checked either by putting it in a known working lamp or with a continuity tester test for continuity between the silver socket threads and the brass middle piece on the bottom of the base of the bulb. If the bulb checks out okay we need to check the switch. With the Power Off the switch is removed from the wiring. Putting one lead on each screw the switch is turned on and off. In the on position we should have continuity and in the off position we should have none. Now we have checked all the components in this circuit. If none of the items was defective then we need to check to see if power is reaching the switch. The switch should be reinstalled with the Power Off. With the power back on a voltage tester should be used to see if voltage is reaching the switch on one of the two screws. If it is then the problem is in that circuit, but beyond the switch and is more difficult to find. At this point, if you are not an electrician, you should really call one because the problem could be a serious one. |
