Troubleshooting Tips

On each of these tech pages I am going to start with this. If you don't have any
experience with electricity you should not attempt electrical work. If you choose to
do so you do it at your own risk. Working with live electricity, even household
current,
can result in serious injury or death. If you have any doubts call a

Basic tools needed for electrical troubleshooting are:
Good Multi tester that can check voltage as well as continuity
or
Voltage Tester
Continuity Tester
Basic Tools - Flat head screwdriver, Phillips screwdriver, wire strippers, needle
nose pliers and side cutter pliers.
Piece of wire to use for a jumper if needed.
Before one can begin troubleshooting an electrical circuit, understanding the way
the circuit works is essential. The diagram below is a basic circuit with power, one
switch and a load in the form of a light bulb.

The above diagram displays an open circuit. If you closed the switch or in the case
of a light switch, turned it on, the circuit would close and the light would come on.
This basic premise has to be understood to troubleshoot electric circuits. No
matter how complicated a circuit may seem it always comes back to a switch
controlling a load. Continue to the
