Most Common Electrical Problems
Troubleshooting Tips
I have listed the most common electrical problems that I have come across. These are problems
that we see over and over. For that reason they are not only common problems but have common
solutions. If you find your problem question just click on it for the answer and explanation. Some
electrical problems have a number of possible causes. If you would like to contribute to these
pages please

My receptacle or receptacles stopped working, no power in the receptacle, half the room
is not working.
First before you go crazy check the obvious. Make sure no circuit breakers are off or tripped
and no fuses are blown. If your new to the house, be sure the receptacle is not controlled by a
switch.
This has to be one of the most common of all electrical problems. The most likely cause is a
loose connection and the most likely cause of that is back-wired receptacles. A back-wired
receptacles will have the wires connected straight into the back of the receptacle instead of the
wire being wrapped around the screw. These tend to create a loose connection over time. The
easiest way to locate the culprit is to have some kind of load, such as a lamp, into the outlet or
outlets that are not working. Then one by one go around the room and with a closed fist give the
wall around each receptacle a couple of good raps. When you get to the one that's bad, the lamp
will light or flicker. The receptacle should be replaced and wired by terminating the wires under
the screws.
If you found this to be the problem it would be wise to check and change any other receptacles
that are back-wired in your home. In most cases the whole house will be wired that way.
If this is not the problem the next most likely is a loose neutral connection somewhere in the
circuit. This can be much more difficult to find. It may require you to open each and every
electrical box in the circuit. Sometimes the neutral is loose in the panel on the neutral bar.
