Pendant lighting over island
Pendant Lights
Pendant lighting is a very popular style of lighting used frequently
over an island or penninsula in kitchens today. They come in a large
variety of styles and colors in both line voltage and low voltage.
Pendants can add style, class and beauty to any kitchen. A frequent
question I see when it comes to pendants is how high should the
pendant light be over the counter. There is no steadfast rule but there
are some guidelines.
One very important consideration is the type of light. If the fixture has
an open bottom that allows one to look up into the bulb, the light should
be low enough so that an average height adult can't look directly into
the bulb. Keeping the bottom of the pendant at about 30" from the
counter or about 5' 7" from the floor. With a closed globe fixture, such
as a schoolhouse style pendant, the height becomes far less important.
Any height you find pleasing will work with that style.
The next question that often comes up is the distance between
pendants on an island. Again there is no steadfast rule but there are
guidelines to follow. Because a kitchen island is a stationary fixture we
want to have symetry with the lighting. We also want to be sure the
island's counter surface will be fully and evenly illuminated. There is a
simple formula to use to accomplish both of these things. The following
illustrations will show you how to space pendants over an island.
