Troubleshooting Tips
Boiler Wiring
Why won't boiler start up?
The first thing we need to do is be sure the boiler has power. If it was wired
properly, the boiler will have a switch. If it's a gas unit, you should find it on the
boiler somewhere. If it's oil it may be at the entrance to the room or top of the
stairs if it's in a basement. Check and make sure switch is on. Do you have
power at the boiler? If you have no power, you'll have to see why. Check circuit
breakers making sure nothing is off or tripped. If you find you have power
coming into the boiler we will have to look elsewhere.
There are some more common problems that we can look at first. Newer boilers
will have a low water cutoff switch. It will look something like
this .  They
usually have an indicator light. If it's green it is functioning correctly and if it's
red it is indicating a low water situation. If it's red you'll need to find the source
of the low water problem.

Another place to look is the damper sensor. On newer boilers there will be a
damper sensor and motor. When the thermostat or hi/lo temperature switch calls
for the boiler to come on the damper motor is energized. A microswitch detects
when the damper is in the right position and completes the circuit to start the
boiler.

Some boilers will be wired with Zone valves. You can find some very detailed
Zone control wiring and diagrams

Most boilers today come pre-wired or as a package. What this means is some of
the boiler controls are already wired or have plug in connectors that just need to
be put together. Some packaged boilers need a little more electric assembly than
others.

This is an Argo 4 zone relay. This unit can be used to control 4 seperate zones or
3 zones and a hot water tank. The hot water tank would be the priority zone. A
priority zone on a relay means that zone takes presedence over all other zones.
